Greenville, SC Demographics
With the amount of growth in Greenville, SC in recent years, I thought it was about time to take a closer look at the area’s population. Find out a little more about the people who call Upstate South Carolina “home.”
Before we get into too much detail, here’s a quick overview:
- The city of Greenville is located in Greenville County.
- Greenville County is one of ten counties that make up Upstate South Carolina.
- The city of Greenville is also the largest city in the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

The population of Greenville County (the largest county in the state) has grown by over 40,000 since 2010, or 1.8% per year.2 For comparison, the population of the United States as a whole is growing by 0.73% per year.3 As a whole, the Upstate’s population grew to 1,426,625 in 2015 from 1,362,073 in 2010.2
Greenville County residents are among the wealthiest in South Carolina. The county’s per capita income ($40,791 in 2014) is second only to Beaufort County, which includes the Hilton Head resort community. The median age is 37.8, with 46.2 percent of people younger than 35.2
The area’s population growth is no doubt connected to the strength of its economy. Greenville was named a “Top 10 Fastest Growing Cities in the U.S.” by CNN Money; the the third strongest job market in 2010 by Bloomberg; and the thirteenth best city for young professionals by Forbes.3
